On the corner of Bath Road and St. Luke’s Road – the northern side – is York House. In the 1844 Harper’s Directory this is listed as York House Brewery occupant Henry Gwinnell, builder.
Also, on the 1855-7 Old Town Survey map, there is a small public house (marked “P.H.”) behind the Montpellier Baths in Bath Road, at the extreme northern-western end. I presume you could access it through the Baths (maybe via a passageway from Bath Road), but certainly via an alleyway which runs along behind the Baths from about halfway and connects out onto Wellington Street. On the Playhouse website, it says it was probably closed shortly after the floods of 1855, when the water was approximately 5ft deep in that part of Bath Road. It doesn’t give a name for it anywhere that I have found so far.
