HENRY’S
In the 1800 list [of Cirencester licensed premises] this was the site of the “GEORGE” a beerhouse,( and before that, the “HARTS HEAD”) The name may have come from the George family of whom Rebecca Powell (Powell’s School) was a member,but by 1790 it had become the warehouse of Thomas Brown, a wine and spirit merchant. (Thomas’s daughter, Elizabeth (1830-1899), was given a telescope when she was young and went on to become a British astronomer who specialized in solar observation especially sunspots and solar eclipses . She was also instrumental in founding the British Astronomical Association.) The business passed to Brown’s great grandson Henry Zachary. The business then traded as Zachary & Co. with shops in Stroud, Tetbury & Gloucester. The firm became part of the Victoria Wines arm of the Ind Coope group, and the retail business was transferred to the Market Place. After being empty for some years, in the late 1990s it became “Harry Hares” bar and restaurant. The name was changed to “Graze” when it became part of the Bath Ales chain.
