Gloucester Journal, 7th December 1861:
STEALING A SPIRIT GLASS. John Hire was charged with stealing a spirit glass, the property of William Lane, Lechlade. —
Mr. Sawyer prosecuted. Mr. Powell, who appeared for the prisoner, called a witness who gave the prisoner a good character for honesty, &c.
The daughter of the landlord deposed to the prisoner being at her father’s house just before the glass was missed ; and a policeman deposed that he apprehended the prisoner at Swindon, with the glass in his possession, which prosecutor’s daughter now identified.
The jury at once found the prisoner guilty, and he was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment.
