A beerhouse called the Mazeppa has been identified by fellow pub enthusiast Martin Edwards in a list of licensed premises in Cheltenham in 1844. The Mazeppa, according to Martin’s list, was located at 9 & 10 Townsend Place, latterly the part of Tewkesbury Road opposite the old Gas Works.
Alan Jones has located the Mazeppa on the west corner of the junction with Charles Street (which was originally Albert Street) at 9-10 Townsend Place which became 9-10 Tewkesbury Road.
