Alan Jones, a fellow Cheltenham pub historian, has supplied the following information:
“There were two pubs in Horsefair Street just below the War Memorial, locations directly across the road from one another. They might have overlapped a little trading, or one might have opened just after the other shut. The older one was The King’s Head – located almost next to the old Police station, and it was on a messuage which had its own brewhouse. It was long ago demolished but a house called Rose Bank is there now.
Across the road was the Anchor Inn. A baker, Richard Ashmead ran it, and local legend was that you could buy your beer by the lb. There’s a building there now called Anchor Cottage.”
