Conway House 332 London Road (A40). In A History of Charlton Kings it says that Conway House was built as a public house, but it didn’t last very long and had closed by 1848. Not listed as a pub in any early directories I had access to. Appears in a listing of detached houses in Annuaires from 1838, when Sir Francis and/or Lady Elizabeth Ford are in residence (Lady Ford from 1840 to 1848).
Seems unlikely they would be running a public house. Was it closed before they took up residence? Or did they operate a beer house for stable staff etc. Could it have been built as a coaching inn on the new London Road which was created along the current A40 route in the 1780s? The old London Road turned off down East End Lane I believe. Current building footprint looks remarkably similar to one seen on old maps from 1850s, and I could imagine it as a potential coaching inn, but maybe it didn’t get the custom expected or needed to be viable. Only mention it because Mary Paget does, and she seems to be a very dependable researcher and archivist.
