I first tripped across the Clarendon Ale & Porter Stores in the 1872-3 Royal Directory listed as being at 21 Pittville Street (east side next to the Sidney Arms), T. Cooke landlord. I managed to trace it through to the 1880-1 Post Office Directory, but by the time of the 1883-4 Post Office Directory it had gone (becoming Clarendon House).
Going back from 1872-3 was trickier because of the nature of the directories I had access to (Annuaires, which often didn’t bother with more lowly beer houses and stores). But I did manage to track it back another decade to 1862 when E. Smith was listed as the landlord.
A Facebook post in the days gone by in Cheltenham group says that it was also known as the Clarendon Inn, but I didn’t see it listed as such in the directories I had access to.
Perhaps its genesis goes back even further though, because in 1852, a poulterer and beer seller called T. Biddle who had been based at 19 Albion Street, moved to 21 1/2 Pittville Street. If so, this would give it a lifespan of nearly 30 years. And even if not, nearly 20.
