It is probable that the Carlton Bar was named after the old Carlton Brewery off Hewlett Street (now Hewlett Road). The exact location of the Carlton Bar, however, is not yet known. It must have been very near to the Hewlett Inn.
There is no record of the Carlton Bar in 1891.
The Anglo-Bavarian Brewery of Shepton Mallet in Somerset owned the Carlton Bar in 1903 and George Capon was the occupying landlord. The beer house had an annual rateable value of £25.10s.0d.
RE: Carlton Brewery, Cheltenham
Location, Hewlett Place was in Hewlett Road, which used to be Hewlett or Hewlett’s Street. It was a small terrace of houses opposite the junction with Albion Street and there was an alleyway through to the northern end of Sidney Street, which is a close that runs parallel to and between Hewlett Road and Priory Street. The brewery malthouse was between the northern end of Sidney Street and the buildings facing on to Carlton Street, with the brewery office in Carlton Place, Hewlett Road. (As you know, the brewery had a Tap Room for a while a little further south in Hewlett Road).
I think the genesis of the Carlton Brewery must have been 1845. In that year’s Annuaire C. Dowle is listed under “Brewers” as being in Carlton place.” In the 1841 to 1844 Annuaires he is listed as a brewer at the Old Swan Inn, High Street; and in the 1841 – 43 Annuaires his name is against the Old Swan High Street but no mention of brewer.
Going forward from 1845, I found the following listings:
1847 Hunt & Co under Brewers – Dowle, Charles, Hewlett’s road
1848 Edwards under Brewers – Dowle, C Hewlett’s road
1850, 1851 & 1852 Edwards – ditto.
1867 Annuaire “Dowle, H. 3, Carlton Place” is listed as one of Cheltenham’s Commissioners under the Cheltenham Improvement and Health Act
1868 Annuaire under Resident Tradespeople, “Dowle brothers, Brewers and Maltsters, 3 Carlton place.”
1872-3 Royal under Carlton Place “3 Messrs. Dowle Bros., brewers.”
1876 Royal ditto
1880-1 Post Office directory under Carlton Place “3 Thomas, Joel Agent” made clear in
1883-4 Post Offce directory under Carlton Place “3 Joel Thomas agent for C. Garton & Co., brewers” I guess Garton must have acquired the Carlton Brewery sometime between 1876 and 1880.
Garton’s agents are then listed at 3 Carlton Place throughout the 1890s in Annuaires, first Joel Thomas, then H. Dredge. His last entry is in the 1900 Annuaire.
Then in the 1901 Annuaire under Carlton Place “3 Mr. H.F. Martyn” again made clearer the next year…
1902 Built-Leonard under Carlton Place “3 H.F. Martyn then below this Anglo-Bavarian Brewery, Ltd. – G.F.F. Turner agent” So Anglo-Bavarian must have acquired the Carlton Brewery.
This is the same in the 1903 & 1904 Built-Leonard directories.
In the 1911 Built-Leonard under Hewlett Street, Carlton Place is a sub-heading, and Anglo-Bavarian Brewery still appears, but there is a new branch manager, L. Whittle.
Then in the 1913 – 1915 Looker-On directories under Hewlett Street the “Anglo-Bavarian Brewery Stores” are listed.
But there is nothing listed in the 1916 Looker-On or the 1922 Built-Leonard directories.
