The Berkeley Arms Hotel is a 16th century coaching inn in the centre of Berkeley. On an 1543 map of Berkeley it is marked as the Kings Inn. The Berkeley Arms Hotel is a large red-bricked building, with an imposing central arch which used to lead to the stables.

Gloucester Journal: 3rd November, 1883 – The Michaelmas rent audit of the Berkeley estate took place on Tuesday at the Berkeley Arms Hotel. Upwards of 100 of the tenants sat down to an excellent dinner provided by Host Gregory. Lord Fitzhardinge presided.

The annual Yeomanry ball will take place at the Berkeley Arms Hotel, Berkeley, on Friday, January 21st 1887, under the distinguished patronage of Col. The Rt. Hon Lord Fitzhardinge, the Marquis of Worcester, and officers of the regiment.

Charles Nimrod T. Long, landlord in 1903, later moved to the Bell and Castle Hotel in Dursley. When he was resident at the Berkeley Arms he once applied for an extension of time until 5 a.m., which was granted in order to host a Yeomanry Ball at the hotel.

Oops! There are two ‘M’s in Accommodation, and Berkeley seems to have an extra letter.

In March 2007 local aristocrat John Berkeley, the occupier of Berkeley Castle, was ‘saved from choking to death’ by Steve Mould, who had previously earned the unenviable title of ‘Britain’s Laziest Man’ in 2002 on BBC Radio Five Live (see Mariners Arms). John Berkeley was enjoying a meal at the hotel when he started to choke badly. Steve performed the Heimlich manoeuvre on Mr Berkeley and said afterwards “I reckon I saved his life but I would have done it for anyone.” No one from the Berkeley Family was available for comment and the pub landlady said: “I don’t know what all the fuss is about.”
