Hi Geoff,
I only really came across this one when trying to sort out the Clarence Hotel. It was located on the corner of Crescent Place and Clarence Street (now called Clarendon House). It started off its ‘hotel’ life as a boarding house (the earliest listing I found was 1863 when it was listed as “Mr G. Walters’ Boarding House, 1 Crescent place” in an Annuaire.
In 1868 it was listed as Mr. G. Walters’ Temperance Hotel with a Clarence Street address, and in the 1872-3 Royal Directory as the same, but with a 1 Crescent Place address.
1876 & 1878 Royal Directories it was listed as Temperance Hotel with Ann Walter proprietor – also 1879 Annuaire and 1880-1 Post Office Directory
By the 1883-4 Post Office Directory still with Mrs. A Walters in charge it was listed as Walters’ Hotel, Clarence Street – and the same in the 1890-1 Post Office Directory.
In the 1895 Annuaire Mrs. Walters is listed, no establishment name is given and the address is listed as Crescent Place again (just to highlight the fun/challenge of trying to follow some of these through in old directories!)
In the 1896 – 1900 Annuaires everything is the same as above, except the person listed becomes the Misses Carr.
But in the 1901 Annuaire it is listed as Carr’s Hotel with a Crescent Place address again, still Misses Carr.
Then in the 1902 Built-Leonard Directory it becomes Carr’s Temperance Hotel in Clarence Street, still with the Misses Carr in charge.
1911 Built-Leonard it is still Carr’s Temperance Hotel Clarence Street, but with T. Parker as proprietor
1912 Annuaire lists Carr’s Hotel Crescent Place, Mrs. Brown – as do the 1913 – 1916 Looker-On Directories
1922 & 1924 & 1925 Built-Leonards still have Mrs. Brown in charge, but it is listed as Carr’s Temperance Hotel under Clarence Street again
1926 – 1933 Kelly’s Directories have “Cleverly, Stephen George, temperance hotel” listed under Clarence Street, but for 1933 & 1934 it becomes Carr’s Central Hotel, then…
1937 – 1945 G.A. Cleverly Carr’s Hotel
1948 J. Moody Carr’s Hotel
1950 & 1952 Mrs. H. Clarkson Carr’s Hotel
1974 Kelly’s no proprietor name is given but it is listed as Carr’s Hotel Ltd.
Then the last I saw of it, was referenced in the 23 September edition of the London Gazette, so I’m not sure when it actually closed.
Cheers,
Alan Jones
