I came across your website when looking for information on a pub that a man I’m researching used to be the landlord / innkeeper of. This is John Nevil Maskelyne (Senior).
In 1851 he is listed in the census as living as Innkeeper at the Salutation Inn, Manchester Walk, Cheltenham. I’ve found on your website that there used to be a Railway Bell on Manchester Walk, but no record of the Salutation Inn.
Do you happen to know anything about this long lost pub? I’m attaching a snapshot from the 1851 census that proves that this was a noted address. The next ones in the census are 2 Chapel Place and Somerset Cottage. According to the Old Town Survey map there seem to be two pubs very close to Manchester walk, one at ‘each end’ if that’s what PH denotes. As there is a Chapel Street and a Somerset House both on the East end of Manchester Street I’m hoping that I’m in the right ballpark if I think that the PH we’re looking at is the one that’s on the left hand side, close to Ambrose Street / Place.
I’ve also found a Newspaper article that places the pub ’near the railway station and Jessops Gardens’. It corroborates the fact that the pub existed and the landlord’s name for the time.
