Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard, 27th August 1870:
Martha Curtis, at Daglingworth applied for renewal of their licenses to sell table beer, which were granted. James W. Richardson. of Daglingworth, applied for a license to sell on the premises. It appeared that the home bad been kept by applicant’s late father for a number of years, and that the necessary notices had been given last year by the father, who died a short time before the licensing meeting. The usual notice. having been proved, the chairman asked if there was any evidence as to character, when Mr. Supt. Chipp said he opposed the application very strongly, for Richardson was an habitual drunkard, and one of the worst characters in the neighbourhood.—The Chairman told Richardson, who became very excited, that his application must be refused.
John Curtis, of Daglingworth, applied for a license to sell off the premises, and handed in a testimonial as to character signed by the Rev. H.R. Raymond Barker and several gentlemen. Granted. At the conclusion of the business Mrs. Richardson applied to the Bench to grant the license to her husband, as she had four children depending on her for support, and said that the superintendent had a great animosity towards him. The Bench said it was impossible to grant the license.
