The following information is courtesy of Paul Best:

George Tanner was born in Newington Bagpath, Gloucestershire during the early 1820’s. By 1841 George had found employment as an agricultural labourer in the local area, however, by 1851 he has become a Police Constable living at Gloucester Street in Cirencester.


Sometime during the next decade he left the police service and relocated to the Brewers Arms in Cheltenham. George is recorded at this Beerhouse on the 1861 and subsequent census returns. George Tanner remained at the Brewers Arms (with his second wife) until his death at the age of 78 years on January 16th 1900.
