Gloucestershire Echo, Thursday 29th July 1993: TV teams mix-up: A pub quiz team from Cheltenham has got through to the final of a TV contest – representing Gloucester. The Peters’ Bar team from Montpellier beat Nottinghamshire rivals in TV’s Home Run to book their place in next Tuesday’s decider. But members of their Gloucester based rivals at the King Edward VII pub say they should have been on the Central TV show instead. They are adamant their teamscored full marks in an audition for the show, but were failed for being too clever.
Peter’s Bar team manager Mr Stan Podmore said: “We didn’t see them at the audition, but we went along and got through and they didn’t. We are representing Gloucester and would have represented Cheltenham, but Central TV decided to say we were from Gloucester.”
During the team’s run in the quiz game hosted by Bullseye star, Jim Bowen, the four – Steve Anstice, Johnny Cook, Dave Williams and Mr Podmore – have raised about £2,000 for the MacMillan Nurses Appeal, the Sue Ryder Home in Leckhampton and the Cobalt Unit’s whole body scanner appeal.
A Central spokeswoman said the team actually represented the county rather than Gloucester.Teams have to answer questions about places on a map and the largest town on the map was Gloucester rather than Cheltenham. “They were picked as Gloucester but it really means Gloucestershire. For instance the Nottingham team really represented thw whole county,” she said. “Cheltenham was on the map, but Gloucester was chosed simply because it was the largest place in the county.”
