Rose Inn, Temple Street, Bristol City

William Gray, aged 22, was charged with of having maliciously stabbed one Henry Church. The prisoner had been endeavouring to sell a cheese at the Rose public house, Temple Street, Bristol; the prisoner’s father was there; both men and father were quarrelling with a man named’ Ridler, but the prisoner saying that two to one was “unfair play” …….. whereupon the prisoner struck him a blow with his left hand on his face and then pulled out with his right a cheese…… and inflicted some serious injuries on his head and face.

This prisoner was found guilty, and the learned judge considering that it was a most disgraceful case, and that he who inflicted it was unworthy of the name of an Englishman, sentenced the prisoner to 18 months’ imprisonment.
