The landlord of the New Inn in Prestbury Road, John Edins, moved to take on two pubs in the Bath Road. In the 1844 Harper’s Directory he is listed at a beerhouse called the Brewer’s Arms, which would have been located where the Four Alls later Five Alls came to be. He also had a butchers shop next door. The 1844 Harper’s listing runs:
“John Edins Brewer’s Arms
Butcher John Edins
—— Francis Street ——
Walter Buckle, baker & maltster”
John Edins is also listed under “Beer Retailers” with an address that just says Bath road in the 1847 Hunt & Co. Directory and the 1848 Edwards Directory.
I found this in a Saturday 29 September edition of the Bristol Mercury:
“A few days ago Mr. John Edins, aged 54, landlord of the Cannon beer-house near Cheltenham, went to his front door, fell, and immediately expired.”
I found the Cannon Inn listed in the 1844 Harper’s Directory. It was near the King’s Arms – and would have been where Bloodworths shop is now. The listing runs:
“Batsford E., china dealer AND
Cannon inn b.h.
T.Tuckett King’s Arms“
