The 16th century Salmon Inn was once a cider house. The Salmon Inn had an extensive refurbishment in October 1999.

In December 1985 an impressive £1,222 was raised by the regulars at the Salmon Inn which was donated to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. What made this charity raising event so special was that the money had come from a huge pile of two pence coins that had been assembled on the pub bar for a period of six years or so. The pile was knocked over with the help of BBC Points West presenter Carolyn Righton.

The Citizen: Wednesday, 11th February 1987 – Death of former Mayor: Lieutenant Commander John Lihou (73), a former Mayor and licensee has died suddenly at his home in Berkeley. He served in the medical branch of the Royal Navy for more than 30 years, saw active service in World War II, and was awarded the MBE in 1962. His family’s links with the sea spanned several generations, and his great-great grandfather, also named John, commanded Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory only 30 years after the Admiral’s death. Lt. Commander Lihou, an ex-wardmaster, retired from the Royal Navy in 1964 and became a civil defence organiser in Bristol. He was later licensee of the Salmon at Wanswell for eight years. He took a close interest in Berkeley affairs and was a former town mayor and curator of the world-famous Jenner Museum.

Citizen: Tuesday, February 12th, 1991: Licensees Clive and Elizabeth Ernill are on the move to Dorset after transforming the Salmon Inn at Wanswell into a large pub and restaurant. As a parting gesture the couple knocked down a huge pile of coins collected in their bar over the last four years which raised £800 for the RNLI.
