The Regal is a JD Wetherspoon pub which opened in a former cinema of the same name. A million pounds was spent on the conversion. The Regal cinema and theatre was host to many famous entertainers including Norman Wisdom, Tony Hancock, Diana Dors, the Black & White Minstrel Show, Max Bygraves, Ken Dodd, Frankie Howard and Morecombe and Wise. The most famous act to perform at the Regal was the Beatles.

The final stage show was a production of Camelot staged by the Gloucester Operatic and Dramatic Society on 25th March 1974. The old stage of the old cinema is now a raised drinking area. A large wall of glass has replaced the old projection screen. An outside drinking area is accessed through the glass partition to the rear. The old circle area above the bar has a large model of King Kong attacking biplanes suspended from the ceiling!

The Regal was one of the first non-smoking Gloucester city centre pubs. JD Wetherspoon banned smoking in all their pubs in May 2006.
