In 1853 an Irishman, Colin Glen, living at Tredegar was caught in the Rose in Hand by officers from Ross on Wye. He had been selling coloured gin for brandy in pubs at Lydbrook. They had sent for the officers. when searched he had four bladders with him, two empty, the other two contained three quarts and one pint of gin. In a bottle was burnt sugar and treacle used to colour the gin. He was fined £50 or three months in Littledean House of Correction.
There is no trace of the Rose in Hand in the 1871 census.
