A new pub on King John’s Island was officially opened by the local MP, Nicholas Ridley, on Friday 13th July 1984. It first traded as the Winking Frog, and later changed its name to the Two Bridges.

It was renamed King’s John Tavern. Local residents objected when an application to extend the opening hours to 1.30 am were permitted in November 2005 (Fridays and Saturday nights). A year later residents expressed their frustrations claiming that they were being kept awake by loud music and unacceptable drunken behaviour.
