The Wheatstone Inn was opened on March 4th 2002. It was named in honour of Sir Charles Wheatstone, a famous local inventor (born in Barnwood) who invented the first British electric telegraph and a number of musical instruments. The construction involved using a large number of recycled materials, which gives the Wheatstone Inn an old-fashioned look. The interior features beamed ceilings, open fireplaces and exposed brickwork. The Scottish & Newcastle development also included an 83 bedroom budget hotel adjacent to the pub.
