Martin Edwards has compiled a list of Cheltenham pubs that were trading in the year 1844, and has identified a beer house called the Squirrel which he places in Alstone Terrace in Gloucester Road.

Alstone Terrace was a small street containing no more that half a dozen properties opposite Market Street in Gloucester Road. The Cheltenham Gas Company may have acquired the site containing the Squirrel Inn for expansion.

The photographer is standing in the approximate location of Alstone Terrace.

The location of the Squirrel now forms part of Tesco supermarket car park, possibly directly opposite the now closed Hop Pole Inn.
