The Spread Eagle beer house has been identified by fellow pub historian Martin Edwards in the list of pubs he has compiled in Cheltenham in the year 1844. The address of the time is given as 1 High Street which now equates to 77 London Road which is on the corner of Old Bath Road – the original start of Cheltenham High Street.

The present 77 London Road is a large Regency House, and the part of the premises was once a licensed bar called the Sunset (after the 1960’s TV Programme 77 Sunset Strip).

But was the Spread Eagle beer house in the same building, or a property near or on the site that was demolished to make way for the more imposing Regency building.
