Above: A 1986 pub sign which appears to depict a Midland Railway Johnson 4-2-2 single wheeler which were introduced in 1887. The entire class had been broken up by 1922. The number depicted on the engine – 1870 – does not equate with the numbering system of a Johnson’s single wheeler, more likely to be from a 1F 0-6-0 Johnson Midland design (41870 in British Railways numbering).
