On the north side of Nelson Street a house given for charitable uses by the Revd. William Johns in 1720 had opened as the Horse Shoes public house by 1752, but by 1826 was called the New George Inn.
The New George is mentioned in the 1830 Pigots Gloucestershire Directory.
