Martin Edwards has done some research on the long-gone pubs in Cheltenham and has compiled a list of licensed premises in the town in 1844. He lists two pubs in Ambrose Street, the Hit & Miss and the Leopard Inn. Presumably these pubs traded concurrently with each other. About fifty years later there is a reference to a Broad Gauge Inn in Ambrose Street which was apparently located opposite the Railway Hotel / St James’ Hotel (now Bottle of Sauce).

Most of Ambrose Street has changed beyond recognition since the Hit & Miss and Leopard Inn were serving pints in early Victorian Cheltenham. It must be assumed that the pubs have long been demolished.
