Martin Edwards, a fellow pub historian, has identified a pub called the Horse & Groom which he has listed in the pubs of Cheltenham existing in 1844. The location is given as Sandford Road, but Martin suggests that the Horse & Groom might have later become the Wheatsheaf Inn in Old Bath Road. The details are contradictory as Sandford Road is some distance from the present Wheatsheaf Inn.
