Ann Partridge was charged with stealing from the till a sum of ‘four florins, three shillings, a sixpence and some coppers’. The landlady told the court that her only desire was to get her money back and not to punish the offender. ‘The magistrates said that they could be no parties to such a proceeding and the chairman of the court sentenced her to two months of hard labour.’
