There is a reference to the Gate Inn in 1851. The address is given as Sodbury Road in 1901. A private house at 30 Sodbury Road is called the Old Gate (GL12 8NR). Opposite the house are the remains of the pound building which can still be seen in the boundary wall. However, it is thought that this part of the Sodbury Road did not have a turn pike or toll gate.
