Ind Coope Brewery in Burton on Trent had acquired the Crown Inn at Shuthonger by 1903. Eighty years later the Crown Inn was still branded as an Ind Coope pub, in the 1980’s Ind Coope were owned by Allied Breweries – one of the ‘big six’ national brewery conglomerates. Their flagship beer was keg Double Diamond.
The Crown at Shuthonger falls into the category of one of those pubs that seem to have been trading for years yet has not marketed itself as a destination for dining or for its selection of real ales / craft beers. There has been little promotion or press advertisements and a google search indicates that there is no active dedicated website or even social media activity. The CAMRA website What Pub! simply states that the Crown has comfortable bars that have a nautical theme. Real ale is apparently no longer available.
The image below (from Google Maps) shows a sign to the left of the front door. This is a Devenish Brewery advertisement (from Weymouth) and the two square signs either side of the first floor windows are Buckley Brewery (from Wales) advertisements. A previous landlord obviously had a great passion for real ales. Both breweries are now obsolete. Are the signs still there?
It seems that the emphasis is now on Chinese Food Takeaway, trading as Uncle Chen. The Crown at Shuthonger was awarded a Food Hygiene Rating of 1 (Major Improvement Necessary) by Tewkesbury Borough Council on 27th June 2021.
