Circus Bar is mall up-market bar situated almost opposite the Queens Hotel in the upper part of the Promenade. A ‘pub talk’ feature in the ‘Gloucestershire Echo’ described the Circus Bar in October 2005 as an ‘intimate bar that’s popular with the after-work crowd and its laid-back atmosphere makes it the ideal place for a weekend drink. Decorated in neutral colours, with modern plate glass windows. There’s no music in the bar so conversation reigns.’

The Circus Bar is owned by Samuel Smiths of Tadcaster, Yorkshire. There is no corporate advertising to indicate ownership which is perhaps indicative of this unique and solidly traditional Yorkshire brewery. Sam Smith’s also own the Mill at Withington and the Old Crown and Robert Raikes pubs in Gloucester – all unbranded. Under a directive from the brewery’s director mobile phones, swearing and music are effectively banned from his pubs.
