The Burton Street Brewery was owned by the Cheltenham Original Brewery in 1891. It was licensed as a beer house with an annual rateable value of £15.5s.0d. The rateable value had increased to £17.0s.0d. in 1903 and it remained tied to the Cheltenham Brewery. Presumably the Burton Street Brewery was somewhere in Burton Street, off Lower High Street. The postal code for Burton Street is GL50 3NE
The Burton Street Brewery closed in 1922 and a sum of £42.0s.0d. was awarded in compensation to Emma Carpenter.
RE: Burton Street Brewery, Burton Street, Cheltenham
Looking through those lists of “Beer Retailers” in old directories (1847 Hunt & Co. and 1848 / 1850 / 1851 / 1852 Edwards) I came across something which made me wonder if some renumbering had occurred in Burton Street, or perhaps a venue move.
In your Burton Street Brewery listing you don’t have an address, but you have a retail brewer listed for 1830 – Thomas Gibbons – then a massive gap to 1891 and 1903.
I was looking to see if there was anything in the “Beer Retailers”
I did find a few (and I will clue you in on some others at bottom), but one surprised me – Benjamin Clarke is listed in the 1847 Hunt & Co. and in all the Edwards as B. Clarke – but in each one his address is given as 12 Burton Street. I have no record of a beer house at 12 Burton Street [unless you can help] – but I did find the Burton Brewery later on, which I thought these might relate to…only at a different street number 20.
Now you have a single entry for the Twelve Bells at 19 in 1870.
But in the 1872-3 Royal Directory, I found the Burton Brewery listed at 20, W. Morris landlord or brewer. So I did some further research and found…
1876 Royal directory, for 20 Burton Street Ephraim Smart listed as ‘publican’ – no mention of pub name or brewery.
1902 Built-Leonard directory Mrs. Carpenter Burton St. Brewery listed in an in-order listing with no number but immediately after no. 19
This was the same in the following Built-Leonard directories too: 1903, 1904 and 1911
Now where no.20 would have been is now residents’ garages. So I think we can now peg the location of the Burton Street Brewery.
Still not sure if Benjamin Clarke at no. 12 fits with this and a renumbering – or if he was selling in respect of a beer house I am unaware of.
