“I think this old cider house must have had a reputation as the local farmers were always complaining that it was a magnet for their workers. Indeed there was a stabbing incident there in 1861 and in 1866 Thomas Cooke the landlord was fined for selling cider during prohibited hours on a Sunday. Also naming your property after a famous lunatic asylum and selling scrumpy cider must give a hint of the clientele you serve.”
