Bar Med was located on the corner of Pittville Street and Albion Street.  Four shops were converted in the £1.6 million development including the former People’s Phone and Orange Shops. Bar Med opened in May 2001 as a café-style bar with waitress service during the day and a venue for pub-goers during the evening. The world’s tallest town crier, seven feet tall Martin Wood from Shrewsbury, presided over the opening ceremony.  The company that owned Bar Med, Surrey Free Inns (SFI), went into administration in June 2005. After a period of closure, the premises opened again as Mbargo in 2007.
