Stroud News & Journal, March 1972 – Mystery Brewing? Regulars at the Fountain Inn, Uplands, Stroud are intrigued by the fact that there was once a brewery in the village. This has been one of the main talking points since landlord Mr. Harold Bingle obtained a two gallon stone jar from a local antique dealer. It has been put in a prominent position above the bar.
The jar is labelled “Guilford’s Brewery” and advertises “high class ales and stouts”. Said Mr Bingle: “The antique dealer thought I might be interested in the jar and let me have it. He seems to think it was made between 1880 and 1885. “None of my customer has been able to throw any light on the subject. We would like to know where the brewery was situated and what happened to it.”
